Les "Pee Wee" Harrison
Co-Founder
In 1986, after setting several school records that still stand today, Harrison received a call from Meadowlark Lemon, the "Clown Prince of Basketball" himself. The most famous Harlem Globetrotter of all time had started an off-shoot team called the Harlem All-Stars, which included many former Globetrotters, such as Fred "Curly" Neal, Larry "Gator" Rivers, and Tyrone "Hollywood" Brown.
And, over the next several years, as he traveled around the globe, visiting the presidents, kings, and princes, Harrison - who now went by the nickname "Pee Wee" - played against many of the basketball legends of the day. He even took the court with "Pistol" Pete Maravich.
The Harlem All-Stars were similar in playing style to the Globetrotters and performed many of the same antics on the court fans had grown to love over the decades. One trademark shared by both clubs is exceptional ball-handling skills, which Harrison put on display in the next segment of his presentation to the Clarinda Academy students.
Working with a group of students, he demonstrated how each of the ball-handling drills performed at center-court prior to each game are done. Some of the demonstrations were more humorous than others, but there was a three-fold purpose behind the exercise.
"I want each of you to come from this with three important messages," Harrison said. "It's important to applaud for others, it's important to accept applause from others, and - most importantly - it's important to applaud yourselves. Sometimes, that's most difficult."
After receiving his bachelor's degree from George Fox University, Harrison continued his education and received both his master's in business administration degree - also from George Fox - and his master's of arts in teaching from Portland University. He has used his education as a coach, a trainer, a talent scout, and as an entrepreneur.
He is executive director of Showtime Athletics, a basketball program for youth in the Portland, Ore., area, as well as Competitive Edge Basketball, which provides basketball skills clinics and scouting camps in northern Oregon. And, he also continues to provide motivational speaking services at schools across the United States.
